Understanding Autism: Seeing the World Differently

Definition

Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental condition that affects how a person communicates, interacts with others, and experiences the world. People with autism may think, learn, or react differently. The word "spectrum" means that each person with autism is unique, and symptoms can range from mild to severe.

Characteristics

  • Difficulty with social interactions (like talking or playing with others)

  • Repeating words, actions, or routines

  • Strong interest in specific topics or objects

  • Trouble understanding facial expressions or body language

  • Sensitivity to sound, light, or touch

  • Prefers routines and may become upset with changes

Accommodations & Modifications

  1. Use visual schedules and pictures to show steps

  2. Give clear, simple instructions

  3. Provide quiet spaces or sensory tools

  4. Allow extra time to complete tasks

  5. Give choices to help them feel in control

  6. Use social stories to explain social rules

  7. Keep routines consistent

  8. Pair the student with a peer buddy

  9. Use positive praise and rewards

  10. Break tasks into small steps
