Definition

Gifted and Talented learners are students who show exceptional ability or potential in one or more areas such as academics, creativity, leadership, the arts, or intellectual pursuits. According to the U.S. Department of Education, gifted students perform at, or show the potential for performing at, high levels of accomplishment compared to others of the same age, experience, or environment.

These students may need enriched or accelerated learning opportunities to stay engaged and reach their full potential.

Characteristics

Gifted and talented students may:

  • Learn new concepts quickly and independently

  • Show intense curiosity and ask deep or unusual questions

  • Have a large vocabulary or advanced verbal skills

  • Demonstrate creativity or original thinking

  • Become bored with repetitive or slow-paced instruction

  • Show sensitivity to others’ emotions or social issues

  • Excel in a particular subject (math, music, writing, etc.)

  • Prefer the company of older peers or adults

Not all gifted students excel in every area, and some may struggle with focus, motivation, or social-emotional needs.

Accommodations & Modifications

To support and challenge gifted students, educators can:

  • Offer enrichment projects or advanced learning paths

  • Use flexible grouping based on interest or ability

  • Provide choice in assignments, topics, or products

  • Accelerate curriculum in subjects where they excel

  • Integrate higher-order thinking and problem-solving tasks

  • Include mentorship or independent study opportunities

  • Support emotional and social development (especially for twice-exceptional students)
